Job Description

We are seeking a board-certified, fellowship-trained Addiction Medicine Physician to join our multidisciplinary team. This full-time position combines outpatient clinic coverage five days per week with inpatient consultation support across the hospital. The physician will serve as a clinical leader in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) and co-occurring conditions.St. Joseph’s Health is recognized for the expertise and compassion of its highly skilled and responsive staff. They are also recipients of the prestigious 2010 Magnet Prize - one of only 8 Magnet-designated hospitals to ever receive The Magnet Prize, and the only one worldwide to receive the 2010 award.MD or DO from an accredited medical schoolCompletion of an ACGME-accredited Addiction Medicine fellowshipBoard certification in Addiction Medicine (ABPM or ABAM) — required; candidates with active board eligibility and a clear timeline to certification will be consideredExperience with hospital-based MAT bridge programs or Emergency Department SUD intervention protocols preferredCurrent New Jersey medical license or eligibility to obtain prior to start dateCurrent DEA registrationDemonstrated experience managing patients with complex SUD and co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditionsStrong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in a high-volume, multidisciplinary urban hospital environmentOutpatient Clinic and Inpatient Consultative ServicesProvide direct patient care five days per week in the Addiction Medicine clinicProvide as needed inpatient consultative services for admitted patients with substance use disorder management needs (see below)Conduct comprehensive evaluations and develop individualized treatment plans for patients with alcohol, opioid, stimulant, and polysubstance use disordersPrescribe and manage medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in compliance with current DEA regulations and NJ state lawCollaborate with behavioral health, social work, and care coordination teams to support patient retention and recoveryParticipate in quality improvement initiatives and clinic operations meetingsLead development of a MAT bridge program in partnership with the Emergency Department and aligned with the goal to reduce 30-day substance use disorder readmissions.Inpatient ConsultationRespond to consult requests from inpatient units including the ED, trauma service, medicine, and surgical floorsAssess and manage acute withdrawal syndromes, initiate bridge treatment, and develop discharge plans with transition to outpatient careProvide education and guidance to inpatient teams on SUD identification and evidence-based managementPartner with case management and social work on complex discharge planning for high-risk patientsGeneralMaintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMRAdhere to all hospital policies, Joint Commission standards, and applicable NJ state regulationsContribute to staff and resident education as clinically appropriateParticipate in on-call coverage rotation as requiredFull timePosting Date: 2026-09-04
