Job Description

Provides comprehensive rehabilitation therapy assessment and treatment interventions for adult psychiatric inpatients in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Plans, develops, and implements individual and group therapy sessions for adult inpatients. Primary responsibilities include: conducting group and individual therapy with patients; maintaining accurate and up-to-date charting; maintaining supplies and organizing inventory, supporting community and donor relations; and supervising interns and volunteers. Provides patient and/or family education regarding independent living skills, including self‑care, socialization, leisure and coping skills. Provides specialized clinical groups and interventions including music, drama, art therapy as well as dual diagnosis/substance abuse, pain management. Department Description: Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital Responsibilities Develops curriculum, implements, and evaluates the adult inpatient rehabilitation services program. Provides oral and written communication regarding the program. Formulates rehabilitation services patient assessments and treatment plans. Provides group and/or individual interventions, verbal and non‑verbal, in areas such as music therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), pain management, dual diagnosis, eating disorders, spirituality, stress management, functional life skills, aging issues, leisure skills, treatment planning, symptom awareness, gender issues, and community resources. Completes formal assessments of functional life skills (e.g., Kohlman Evaluation of Living Skills‑KELS) as ordered and documents results and recommendations. Provides individualized clinical care for patients unable to attend group therapy due to behavioral difficulties or specialized conditions, and develops behavioral plans. Plans and implements special events and programming for religious, national, and cultural holidays. Plans, organizes, and leads movement and physical activities. Documents assessment, treatment plans, and progress notes in a timely manner. Participates in developing and distributing patient education materials such as community resource libraries, DBT handouts, pain management packets, dual diagnosis and eating disorder resources, and 12‑step materials. Organizes, maintains, and oversees distribution of patient welfare items (apparel, radios, reading materials, art supplies, consumables). Develops hospital and community referrals for patient volunteer and job placements. Participates in rehabilitation services staff meetings, performance improvement and huddles, and unit protocol development. Participates in Lean Management activities, including daily huddles and monthly leadership rounds. Maintains program inventory and orders supplies or equipment. Coordinates, develops, implements, and evaluates the Rehabilitations Services Clinical Training Programs (e.g., Music Therapy Internship). Recruits, selects, and supervises interns and evaluates their performances. Provides clinical supervision to assigned interns and students. Participates in research studies and reports results of rehabilitation services research. Participates in CPI training for staff and Safety and Security training for residents. Participates in in‑service training seminars, conferences, and workshops on specialized clinical topics and presents at lectures or workshops. Maintains current knowledge of the profession by meeting continuing education, certification, or licensure requirements. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree required. Certification or registration in field of expertise or eligible for certification/registration. Experience working with adults in individual and group‑based interventions in psychiatric treatment of at least two years (one year if internship completed within the hiring department). Demonstrates skills, knowledge, and ability in developmentally and age/population‑appropriate interventions. Demonstrates ability to assess individual patients’ developmental level, general medical condition, psychosocial needs, and capabilities. Provides patients opportunities to express thoughts and feelings and offers supportive therapeutic support. Demonstrates compassion and understanding to build rapport with patients and families. Ability to communicate pertinent information, coordinate goals with medical staff for optimal health outcomes. Demonstrates ability to plan and facilitate therapy groups. Demonstrates oral and written communication skills for preparation of medical records, oral presentations, and conferences. Requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. Rec Therapist3 Specifics Requires all above qualifications plus at least five years of experience in individual and group‑based psychiatric interventions. Preferred additional qualifications: experience in mentoring and supervision, and experience in program development. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with people who have acute/severe mental illness. Experience providing evidence‑based treatments to psychiatrically acute patients in a similar clinical setting.
